Sh2-216

Planetary Nebula, Perseus

December 2023. Cave Creek Canyon Observatory, Arizona Sky Village

Sh2-216 is a large planetary nebula in the constellation Perseus. It is located in the easternmost part of the constellation, about 5° west of the bright Capella. The bright flare on the left side of my image is from Capella which is located just outside the field of view. Sh2-216 appears as a faint gaseous filament that is difficult to observe directly due to its faint brightness. Its observation requires long-exposure imaging, and even then it barely emerges from the background star field. Its declination is moderately northerly, so its observation is greatly facilitated for observers located at northern latitudes. Sh2-216 can be seen in this image on the right side. To the left is an H-II region, Sh2-221.
