Sh2-118 is a emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus. It is located in the northwestern part of the constellation, a few degrees west of the North American Nebula. The best time to observe it in the evening sky is between the months of July and December and it is considerably easier for observers located in the regions of the Earth’s northern hemisphere.>br> It is a faint system of filament nebulae apparently centered in the region around the star 72 Cygni. However, its dimensions are considerable, extending about 8° and apparently connecting with other nearby clouds, such as Sh2-113, Sh2-114 and the large Cygnus X and Sh2-109 system. The only estimate of the distance for this nebula was made in 2003 and gives a value of about 3,800 pc. If this measurement turns out to be correct, Sh2-118 would be well beyond the Cygnus X system and probably outside the Orion arm as well.
