Barnard 228 (B228), also known as “The Dark Wolf Nebula”, is a Dark Nebula in the constellation of Lupus the Wolf. These dusty obscuring clouds are part of the Lupus Molecular Cloud some 500 light-years distant. The nebula contains many low mass stars are forming within, from collapsing cores only visible at long infrared wavelengths. This larger region spans about 8 degrees, and is located not far from the central Milky Way.
B228 is part of a catalog of Dark Nebulae compiled by the astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard known as the Barnard Catalogue of Dark Markings in the Sky, or the Barnard Catalogue for short. The nebulae listed by Barnard have become known as Barnard objects. A 1919 version of the catalogue listed 182 nebulae; by the time of the posthumously published 1927 version, it listed 369.
