Open Cluster, Dark & Reflection Nebulae, Scutum

June 2024. Cave Creek Canyon Observatory, Arizona Sky Village

At the center of this image is NGC 6649, a small Open Cluster in the constellation of Scutum. It is located just South of the Celestial Equator within the dense star fields of the Milky Way. It is seen against the backdrop of Lynd’s Dark Nebula 435 (LDN 435), which is just one of many Dark Nebulae in this region. Just below and right of NGC 6649 is IC 1287, a Reflection Nebula. The nebula is illuminated by the associated star, SAO 161569. Amongst the many Dark Nebulae in this region also lie the Open Clusters Messier 26 (M26) (upper left) and also NGC 6664 (top center).
