RCW 80, also known as Gum 48d, is a HII region in the constellation Centaurus. The region is ionized by the B0 IP supergiant HR 5171B, which has as a companion the highly variable G8 Ia supergiant HR 5171A. It is located in the Centaurus arm at a distance of about 3500 parsecs and is distinct from the supernova remnant SNR 309.2-00.6, which is probably located further away. The supernova is often given the designation RCW 80 although the RCW catalog states clearly that RCW 80 refers to the HII region. Below RCW80 is the open star cluster NGC 5281.
